Advanced Physical Therapy
works to get your body back to pain free function and mobility. The professionals at our office specialize in remediation of impairments and dysfunction. This process involves thorough examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention. Our physical therapists
are skilled in prevention, assessment and management of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems. We utilize several different methods as well as continuing education to ensure that our techniques are up to date and effective.
Manual Therapy
Manual physical therapy is a specialized hands on physical therapy technique. In manual therapy, practitioners use their hands for range of motion, stretching, joint mobilization, joint manipulation, soft tissue mobilization, and myofascial release. These techniques help to decrease pain caused by muscle spasms, muscle tension and joint dysfunction.
Exercise Therapy
Exercise is the cornerstone of health and wellness. At Advanced Physical Therapy patient specific exercise programs are tailored to rebuilding muscle and function. These exercise programs may include flexibility, strengthening, range of motion, nerve mobility, balance and proprioceptive exercises. We have a fully equipped gym facility catering to all exercise techniques, as well as the ability to create Home Exercise Programs so you can continue your program independently.
Geriatric Therapy
Physical Therapy for the geriatric population focuses on maintaining quality of life. Geriatric patients may suffer from a variety of diagnoses, which can negatively impact their safety. Fall-risk prevention is an important aspect of geriatric therapy. Geriatric patients can benefit from a well rounded program in order to maintain independence in their living environment. At Advanced Physical Therapy, geriatric therapy consists of strength, range of motion, transfer, balance, posture, endurance, gait, and falls risk prevention training.
Post-Surgical Therapy
At Advanced Physical Therapy post-surgery rehabilitation protocol is essential for effective healing. Physical Therapy treatments are planned with protocols in order to return to full function. The ultimate goal is to return the patient to complete independence and to help them continue living a full and active lifestyle. We create customized post-surgical therapy programs based on the individual and type of surgery.
Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy is an excellent treatment program for patients who have difficulty walking or performing land based activities. The warmth and buoyancy of the water help to alleviate pain and allow patients to gain the strength needed to function on land. At Advanced Physical Therapy, our aqua tank caters to one individual at a time in order to provide patient privacy. The aqua tank also features a treadmill belt which allows patients to improve gait patterns and functional endurance while in the water. You will begin an aquatic exercise program specific to your needs and you will gradually transition to a land based program when appropriate.
Hand Therapy
A hand injury can interfere with many activities of daily living. The main focus of hand therapy at Advanced Physical Therapy is to improve dexterity, fine and gross motor skills, grip, range of motion and strength. We also specialize in custom bracing when needed for positioning and healing. Workers' Compensation and Motor Vehicle AccidentA workers' compensation or a motor vehicle accident can be traumatic and if serious enough, can cause lifelong disabilities. At Advanced Physical Therapy, our focus is to help patients return to prior levels of function for both work and daily living.
We know that recovery from such injuries can be a long, emotionally exhausting and painful experience. Our team will work with you to create a fully customized treatment plan focusing on manual therapy, exercise therapy, massage and modalities. We also focus on positivity and motivation to assist with the physical and emotional healing process.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping is a practice used in traditional medicine involving suction on the skin using a plastic cup. Negative pressure is created in the cup either by attaching a suction device to the cup after it is placed on the skin. Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue. The treatment does leave redness on the skin where placed due to the increased blood flow. This redness will decrease over time. This type of treatment can be helpful for muscular injuries.
Massage therapy often plays an important role in the individualized treatment plans that we develop at Advanced Physical Therapy for our patients throughout Philadelphia and the neighboring communities. Massage-based techniques can be effective for both injuries and prevention, and many patients are able to heal with massage therapy exclusively. This is often the case with some chronic pain conditions, such as severe headaches. Massages can counteract the pain caused by a migraine but also reduce the frequency at which the migraines occur. Other conditions that we use massage therapy for include muscle pain as well as whiplash and other accident injuries.
IASTM
IASTM stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. Tools are used to cause microtrauma to an area that will create a controlled inflammatory response, which leads to healing of tendon and ligamentous injuries by enhancing blood supply and collagen formation. The tools are also used to facilitate connective tissue healing as well as reduce scar tissue.
IASTM is an important adjunct to our manual based treatments. Specifically with scar tissue and tendon injuries. Patients often report relief and decreased pain.
Chronic pain is a condition that effects many of our patients. Traditional physical therapy modalities can be helpful. Often more interventions are necessary. We are also well versed in mirror therapy, Graded Motor Imagery (GMI) and appropriate breathing techniques. There is an understanding of the role of both peripheral and central nervous system when we are treating pain patterns. We are also well networked with other doctor’s and professionals to provide each patient with a coordinated approach.
